Bring exact vessel specifications to the property
Record the boat’s loaded weight, overall length, beam, hull form, draft, propulsion, lift-point guidance from the manufacturer and any tower, hardtop, antennas or accessories that affect clearance. Loaded weight can include engines, fuel, water, batteries, gear and equipment—not merely the published dry hull weight. If the future boat is not chosen, define a realistic size range and avoid assuming the existing equipment will accommodate every option.
Confirm the lift’s rated capacity and configuration
Look for the manufacturer, model, capacity plate, motor information and installation records. Ask whether the cradle, bunks, cables, pulleys, gearbox and cross-members were designed or modified for the current vessel. Capacity alone does not prove hull fit. Bunk spacing, lift points, propeller and skeg clearance, vessel balance and the travel available between the waterline and the fully raised position all matter.
Inspect pilings and structural connections
Marine pilings should be evaluated for alignment, movement, decay, marine-borer damage, cracking, spalling, corrosion and the condition of brackets and fasteners. The lift loads the structure differently from a walking deck. Ask a qualified marine contractor to evaluate whether the pilings and framing remain appropriate for the lift and intended vessel, and obtain a written scope when repairs or replacement are recommended.
Treat waterfront electricity as a separate safety review
Motors, controls, outlets, conduit, disconnects, bonding and over-water wiring deserve review by a properly licensed electrician familiar with waterfront installations. Ask about ground-fault protection, weather exposure, corrosion, damaged conduit, loose enclosures and whether extensions or improvised wiring have been used. A functioning switch during a showing is not proof that the electrical installation is safe or compliant.
Verify permits, approvals and ownership boundaries
Request permits, final inspections, surveys and any association or community approvals for the dock, lift, pilings and electrical work. Compare the installed configuration with available records rather than assuming every visible component was covered. Jurisdiction can depend on location and project type, so start with official local and federal regulatory resources and ask the relevant authority which records or approvals apply to the address.
Measure water depth where the boat must travel
The depth beside the lift is only one point. Consider the approach, canal or river route, tide and seasonal conditions, shoaling, turning room and the draft of the loaded vessel. Ask the seller how the route is used, but independently verify what matters for your boat. Also identify fixed bridges and other clearance constraints from the property to the intended boating destination.
Review maintenance history and replacement planning
Ask when cables, bunks, motors, switches, gearboxes, pulleys and fasteners were last serviced or replaced. Look for frayed cable, uneven winding, corrosion, bent members, deteriorated bunks and noisy or inconsistent operation. Obtain a marine contractor’s service and replacement outlook so the ownership budget reflects more than the lift’s present appearance.
Connect lift fit to insurance and storm preparation
Ask the insurance professional how the dock and lift are treated, what coverage limitations apply and what documentation is useful. Discuss the owner’s plan for severe weather: whether the boat is relocated, how the lift is secured, how power is shut off and which components require post-event inspection. Do not rely on a generic storm routine; use the equipment manufacturer, marina, marine contractor and public safety guidance for the specific setup.
Use a boat-fit contingency checklist
Before the due-diligence period ends, confirm the vessel specification sheet, lift capacity and geometry, marine inspection findings, electrical review, permits and survey, water and route measurements, insurance treatment, repair estimates and closing-time requirements. If a new lift or structural work is part of the plan, verify feasibility and approvals rather than treating replacement as automatic.
